So.....What Makes a Good Domain Name?

We have identified the top 5 characteristics of a good domain name.

Don't be discouraged if your current domain doesn't have all these characteristics this is merely a guide. It is not the end of the world. We are just saying you should make certain considerations before buying a domain.

Everyone can think of popular websites that are lacking in one or two of the points covered on our list. All we are saying is that we recommend that the domain you do eventually choose should have most of the characteristics listed above.

Domain Names Should Be Short

The best domain names are short. It is no coincidence that all the three and four letter .coms have been allocated and some of the new TLD's have these in short supply too.

There is no definitive number of characters that you should go for, but shorter is better, unless it is really memorable. As a guide line try to keep it below 10 characters before the .TLD.

As for the number of words, one word domains are always the first to go, two words in a domain are still good, three word domains are OK, but going beyond that is really a BIG no-no.

Lets look at Business.com, one of the best domains out there and last time it was sold it went for $345,000,000 along with some assets. BigBusiness.com is a good two word domain that is worth thousands of dollars. BigBusinessCard.com is an average domain and could be used for a website with no negatives but not ideal. BigBusinessCardSales.com is just too far!

Memorable Domain Names Work

Even in 2016 the majority of web users do not use bookmarks. They try to memorize the domains of their favorite websites and hope they have cookies enabled or predictive text populating the URL for them.

But if your domain is not easy to remember these guys are going elsewhere.

www.TSPGCoFL.com although a shorter domain name than www.The SyntheticPuttingGreenCompanyofFlorida.com it is not easy to remember, you are better off with something like www.SyntheticPutting.Green.

After creating your website and marketing it the last thing you want is for visitors to misspell your domain name and ending up going to a different site entirely or worse a competitor.

You should also try to avoid foreign words that are not known to the clients you are trying to attract. Also any words that are hard to pronounce should be avoided at all cost.

No .Com No Worries!

A .Com after a domain was always the suffix of choice for businesses large and small. Fast forward to 2013 and ICANN (The International Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers ) said "Hold on we only have 22 domain extensions, we need to open the doors and allow pretty much any suffix and earn lots more money because .com has hardly anything left under 20 letters that has vowels in them!" They didn't but I think you get the gist!

So here we are in 2016 and there are over 1,200 Top Level Domain extensions, (TLD's) available from .Guru to .xyz. We are also seeing top brands entering the market place with the likes of Apple, Amazon, Target and Coke buying their TLD. So soon you will be seeing things like www. iPhone24.Apple,  www.WestPalmBeach.Target and Diet.Coke. The likes of .Porsche, .Citibank, .Barclays and .Google. Google have also gotten involved in the registrar business and have bought .xyz, .ads, .dad, .fly, .how, .new, .mov, .new, .rsvp and .zip.

Through 2014 /2015 it has been hard to keep up with all the new domain extensions, and even the likes of GoDaddy do not sell the all! So now if .Com is not available you can be pretty sure there will be a viable alternative to it. We have found that our clients like .Online as  their second choice and we looked at what was available and thought our old .com should be changed for the new .Domains so our old www.JupiterDomains.com changed to www. Jupiter.Domains.

We would say the first guys to really understand the value of not com was the social bookmarking website Delicious turned .us to their advantage with their www.del.icio.us domain, using .US Country code and a sub domain del.

So the rule you should go by is "If it's memorable and makes logical sense go for it" as a very happy client in Canada did recently with his purchase of Whos.Online (Who's.Online).

They Are Descriptive

Let's face it the majority of your visitors are going to come to your website via a search engine. So having a domain name that describes your business or service in the name will give prospective visitors an idea of what your site is about even before they arrive.

Keywords related to your business or service can work well if they are present in your domain name,  they, along with good content will also help your search engine rankings.

Let us explain, you would know what WoodworkingHints.com was about before you visited the site, so would the search engines. Just imagine you are searching for a help with your bunker (sand trap) play. You make a quick search in Google. The first result that comes up is www.MartinHall.com. The second result is www.SandTrap.Tips. Which one are you going to click, although Martin Hall may be an excellent golf instructor his audience are going elsewhere for getting help on getting out of sand traps.

Domain Names Must Be Brandable

A brandable domain will have a nice punch to it, whether it be an interesting combination of letters, a clever pun or simply has an appeal of some kind.

They may not be describing your services, but they can be equally, if not more, efficient.

Here's where a brandable domains will work, NewEgg.com has managed to make visitors associate the name with quality reasonably priced electrical goods and consumables website and its content. Newegg.com is one of the most popular sites on the Internet. The domain is not descriptive of their products or services they offer at all, in fact you would think it was a poultry farm or suchlike but they have managed to make it such a strong brand that people immediately recognize it across the web. And you know that wasn't cheap!

You may find domain names here that will help you get a recognizable brand on the internet, our buyers have years of experience in both online marketing and we have some great brandable domains. Just check out there are no Trademark infringements before you buy decide on any domain.
